Description |
Plates a pair, Japan 18th century.Pair of moulded porcelain dishes decorated in underglaze cobalt blueJapan, Edo Period, Arita kilns, c.1660-80 Japan has a long and fruitful ceramic history, but did not produce porcelain until the early 17th century. In the 1590s Daimyo (overlord) Toyotomi Hideyoshi conducted military campaigns in Korea in an unsuccessful attempt to conquer China. On his return to Japan he took with him Korean potters, who established kilns in northern Kyushu, where they discovered copious supplies of porcelain clay at Arita. In the 1640s, rebellion and civil war in China damaged her export trade in ceramics, and Chinese potter refugees helped refine manufacturing techniques at the Arita kilns. This pair of dishes imitate closely the style of Tianqi period (1620-27) Chinese porcelain exported to Japan. They are moulded into eight panels containing auspicious emblems outside, the rim washed with iron to strengthen it, and the inside painted with an eight-pointed star-shaped cartouche. In the cartouche are depicted two scholars playing chess on a low table, beside a cliff face out of which grow stunted pines. Above them is an inscription in sketchily-written characters:“In the beautiful time of the Chongyang Festival, water and mountains give pleasure”The Chongyang Festival (also known as Double Ninth Festival) is held on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. Nine is an auspicious number embodying double yang, the male/positive/bright half of the Daoist energies of yin and yang that balance the universe. The Double Ninth day celebrates venerable Old Age, and as the words form a pun for “forever,” ancestors are worshipped on that day. People celebrate by climbing a hill or mountain, so another name is “ Height Ascending Festival”. The decoration of the dishes embodies those themes by depicted wise elderly scholars, pine trees symbolising old age, and a mountain face. It is possible to distinguish the dishes as Japanese rather than Chinese because of their thick bodies, dark-tinted cobalt, rather rudimentary painting style, and the presence of four spur marks on the base. These were the remains of firing supports used in the kiln, that were necessary in Japan even for small pieces, unlike in China. |
